Grief and loss can happen to anyone.
Whenever an individual has experienced a person of significance dying (i.e., spouse, parent, mate, friend, or role model) or a relationship ending, the result is grief. A person can also experience grief when someone they care about is in the process of dying as in the case of a terminal illness or disease.
Grief can also take place when something of significance is lost, such as an important item, a job, physical abilities, or other life changes.
When a person experiences grief, it is important to recognize the stages which may follow:
- Denial
- Anger
- Bargaining
- Depression
- Acceptance
